Strong and Steady Economy Continues
June has brought a lot of good news for Saskatchewan’s economy. More people are working, new homes are being built, retail sales are strong and building permits are up. All of this points to a strong and steady economy — one that continues to grow while our government keeps investing in what matters most: the people of Saskatchewan.
Throughout the year, latest labour force numbers from Statistics Canada shows that Saskatchewan has maintained a strong labour market and steady growth. Our province currently holds the lowest unemployment rate in Canada at 4.2 per cent, well below the national average of 7.0 per cent.
Our province is experiencing record job growth and continues to be an economic leader in the country. To build on this momentum, our government is focused on attracting investment and ensuring Saskatchewan remains one of the best places to live, work and raise a family in Canada.
In building permits, Statistics Canada's latest figures indicate a 31.5 per cent increase from April 2024 to April 2025 in the value of permits issued in Saskatchewan. The total value reached $290 million (seasonally adjusted) in April this year.
This continued rise in building permits reflects a strong economy that delivers for the people of Saskatchewan. Our stable business environment and competitive incentives are helping bring new jobs, new investments and more opportunities for people across the province.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation also recently released new data showing urban housing starts in Saskatchewan increased by 108.6 per cent in the first five months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. This places our province first in the nation.
Moreover, urban housing starts in May 2025 alone rose by 205.9 per cent over May 2024, ranking Saskatchewan second among all provinces for year-over-year growth. This is a clear sign of investor confidence and the positive momentum driving our province forward.
Saskatchewan's retail sector also continues to grow, with a 2 per cent month-over-month increase in retail trade sales from March to April 2025, ranking our province first among all Canadian provinces. In April alone, total value of retail trade reached $2.3 billion.
These strong retail numbers continue to demonstrate consumer confidence in our businesses and industries. Every purchase made right here at home helps support jobs and attract investments – all of which contribute to a strong and growing province.
Surgical Wait Times Improving
While Saskatchewan’s economy continues to show strength, our government is making sure that growth benefits the people of our province through meaningful investments. In health care, more surgeries are being delivered and wait times are improving.
From April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2025, more than 100,000 surgeries and procedures were performed. The health system also exceeded its target of completing 90 per cent of surgeries within eight months, with nearly 92 per cent completed in that timeframe.
The surgical program is now well-positioned to achieve a six-month wait time target for most surgeries set for 2025–26. These improvements are a result of strategic investments, focused targets and the hard work of our surgical teams. Our government is thankful to our surgical teams across Saskatchewan for their hard work and dedication to benefit patients.
New Investments in Education
Education also remains a top priority for our government. Recently, we announced an investment $1.1 million for 29 teacher-led projects through the Teacher Innovation and Support Fund. This will open a space for ideas brought forward by teachers and advance innovative projects in classrooms.
A strong and collaborative education system is the foundation of our province’s future. The program will help support student success, encourage innovation and build brighter futures for young people across Saskatchewan.
